Originally, my plan for this series was to have five episodes: each roughly 10 minutes, forming a miniseries of short episodes. But as I came to write Episode Five, I came up with a plot I figured would be great, but would mean a sixth episode. (The benefit of self-producing: I can change the order at will.)
I had been writing the whole thing in sequence, so I already had the first drafts of the first four episodes written. But I realized something today: the goal for the characters in the first two episodes didn’t really make sense, and certainly seemed so trivial that I couldn’t get too many people to stay with it until the bigger plot begins in Episode Three. Plus, there were plenty of scenes in there that I felt revealed a little too much. Time for a rewrite, I thought.
So I pecked away at it this evening, knocking out a new Episode One draft in a few hours, rolling the first two episodes together, and writing in several jokes. (Boring plot + deadly serious tone = bad “television,” for lack of a better term.) There’s still some work to be done to keep the new Episode One subplot interesting, but it’s far better now than the earlier version.
Meanwhile, back on the ranch, you may notice I have posted some information on voice casting. I’m still not at the stage to audition anybody, but I figured I’d try to get some feelers out there. Drop a comment here if you’re interested, but please give me time to get all the specifics worked out.
